Back in my day, softball was the sport of choice for tournaments on campus. Later, flag football, Ultimate Frisbee, and sand volleyball—even soccer—were popular games amongst the student body. But a new trend is causing a frenzy on the newly green campus lawns: Spikeball.
Invented in 1989, the game centers around a small round trampoline and generally follows the concepts of volleyball. The well-worn grass outside Heritage Hall’s classrooms this spring is testament to the game’s popularity and versatility.
The 2021 Spikeball tournament was held on the campus’ east field, site of the agony of defeat and ecstasy of victory in years past. We’ll see if the trend continues, or if a new sport finds its way onto our fields.
