Moments That Mattered – Alisabeth Boyum

Alisabeth Boyum, Ossian, Iowa, AFLBS junior

Being in Ecuador during spring break was such a blessing to me. Even though it was amazing, it was not without its hardships.

While serving there, acting out the drama and doing crafts with the kids, I was filled with doubts. Was I actually doing any good? Was the language barrier a hindrance? These questions weighed heavily on my mind, until I finally voiced them to a friend.

My friend responded: one does not need the use of words in order to minister or to share Christ’s love with others. Christ is able to use us in ways unknown for the glory of His kingdom. As long as we’re willing to go, Jesus will do the rest.

All I needed to do was pour out all my love into the children while I was there through hugs given and smiles shared—no words needed.

It reminds me of a quote from C.S. Lewis, “Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that through you others can see Him.”
